Naturhotel Forsthofgut: The Dreamiest Alpine Hotel in Austria
Hello for the first time in 2025 and Happy New Year! The last few months of 2024 were a real whirlwind (in the best way possible) so I’ve not had much time to post on here at all. However, I’m SO excited to post in the next few weeks because I’ve got so many photos and guides I’d love to share including from my trips to New Zealand (!!), Edinburgh and Austria.
Starting with my 30th birthday trip… I turned 30 in December last year and I really wanted to celebrate somewhere magical. Naturhotel Forsthofgut immediately caught my eye during the summer so my husband and I booked a 3-night stay at the start of December. The hotel is tucked away in the Austrian Alps and is the perfect mix of luxury and natural beauty. Our stay truly met and exceeded all my expectations.
We were SO lucky with the weather (3 crispy cold sunny days in a row and snow!!) so I spent my birthday standing amidst the snow-covered Alps at golden hour and it was truly magical. Since it was only the second day of the ski season, it felt like we had the entire place to ourselves.
How do you get there?
One of my favorite things about this hotel is how accessible it is by public transport. We didn’t plan to do much exploring on this trip and instead wanted to focus on fully unwinding and switching off, so travelling by train worked very well for us! There is an information centre just 2 mins from the hotel which has free guides on the best hikes and things to do in the area so for a short stay, you don’t need a car.
Although the hotel is just an hour from Salzburg, we found better flight options from other locations such as Germany or Switzerland. We chose to fly from London to Munich, then took a train directly from Munich Airport to Fieberbrunn Station. We booked our tickets in advance through Trainline and the whole process was super simple.
If you get the train to either Fieberbrun, Saalfelden or Leogang, you can arrange for a complimentary pickup from the station to the hotel — and drop off too. You just need to do contact the hotel before your stay to arrange this.
Things you should know about your stay at Naturhotel Forsthofgut
Overall, this is easily one of the best hotels I’ve stayed at. The facilities were exceptional, and the staff were warm and welcoming from the moment we arrived… There were lots of little touches like warm hand towels at check-in and a personalised welcome board with guest names at the entrance.
The rooms were incredibly comfortable, though the interior design wasn’t entirely to my taste. That said, our room also had a beautiful view of the surrounding mountains which we soaked up each morning.
The room rate includes half-board, which includes an impressive buffet breakfast—think fresh fruits, a variety of breads, juices, salads, hot dishes, and more. Dinner each evening is a 4-course tasting menu, but you also have the option to dine at one of the hotel’s fine dining restaurants if you prefer a different experience.
The spa facilities were a highlight of our stay. With multiple saunas, various pools (including a natural outdoors pool and 25-metre pool), and peaceful relaxation areas, it’s the perfect place to unwind. You can also book treatments during your stay, which I’d definitely recommend doing well in advance as lots of the slots booked up early.
The hotel is a dream if you love to ski as you can ski directly to the hotel, and the ski lift is just two minutes walk away. The hotel includes one complimentary guest pass to use this too. If you’re not skiing (like us), you can just use the lift to head up to the mountains and be surrounded by the beautiful scenery. There are a couple of restaurants and bars too.
There is also an information centre at the base of the ski lift where you can find free maps and guides on nearby hikes. If we’d seen this sooner, we’d have tried a 1-2 hour hike nearby to explore the area. Make sure you’ve got all the equipment you need to stay safe, if you’re planning to hike in the snow.
The hotel is perfect for a quiet solo trip or a cosy stay in the mountains.
Naturhotel Forsthofgut combines the stunning natural surroundings with luxury amenities and warm, personalised service. If you’re thinking about a trip to Austria, this hotel should definitely be on your list.
