Hotel review: Double Red Duke

If you saw my previous post, you’ll know that I spent a long weekend in the Cotswolds last month with Country Creatures. If you missed it, go and read it for a guide on how to spend 24 hours in the Cotswolds. It’s particularly useful if it’s your first time there!

If you do choose to follow my itinerary and you’ve exhausted all your energy or you’re just looking for a hotel in the Cotswolds to unwind, then this is THE ONE. The second night of my trip was spent at the Double Red Duke. We wanted to make the most of our short stay so we spent majority of our time lounging and relaxing in and around the hotel. The whole place very quickly charmed me - it’s a beautiful renovation and an idyllic spot for an autumnal or winter UK staycation.

things you should know

  • Price - rooms (including continental breakfast) start from around £180 a night but can get very expensive very quickly on weekends. The continental breakfast includes muesli, homemade granola, pastries, fruit, toast etc. and fresh juices which I thought was enough.

  • In your room - I was very kindly offered a stay in one of their larger rooms, which was complete with a charming wood-beamed ceiling. The room also had a gorgeous freestanding bathtub and a HUGE rain shower. There are lots of small details to make your stay special like home-baked cookies, a Roberts radio and cosy dressing gowns. Overall, the interiors are very much in line with the other Country Creatures hotels but this one somehow felt more vibrant and bold.

  • Hotel facilities - there is THE cosiest of snugs where I spent time flicking through their coffee-table book selection. There’s plenty of space with comfy sofas and board games for everyone to enjoy. There’s also a lot of indoor and outdoor dining space but it is quite pricey so we opted for a local pizza takeaway and then treated ourselves to dessert in the hotel’s restaurant. What I sadly only realised after my stay was that there is also a spa in their Shepherds Hut!

  • Getting there - unfortunately, it is probably best to drive as the nearest station (Shipton or Oxford) is 30 mins away. This means it’s also best to have a car to explore nearby areas.

I hope my imagery is enough to convince you to add it your list for a cosy autumn/winter staycation. If you can drive, you could also use it as a base to explore other nearby villages such as Burford, Bamton and Bourton-on-the-Water.

T.
