A countryside cottage in Somerset
A couple of weeks ago, my friends and I drove to Somerset for a wholesome weekend away in the countryside. We didn’t have much planned other than to switch off, eat good food and go for swims so we found a beautiful airbnb in Somerset with countryside views and a lovely pool which let us do basically that. A link to the airbnb is at the end of this post!
How do you get there?
The airbnb is in Somerset on Pennard Hill Farm so it would be easiest to drive. However, it is also possible to get there by public transport if you’d prefer. The closest train station is Castle Cary (the same one that takes you to Glastonbury Festival) and then it’s just over 20 mins in a taxi from there.
Alternatively, you could get the train to nearby Bruton or Frome and get a c.30 min taxi from either of those to the airbnb. You could plan it so that you spend the day in either of those towns first (there’s lots of cute local shops, vintage shops and cafes) and then get a taxi to the airbnb in the evening.
If you do choose to go via public transport, remember to stop off at a supermarket first to pick up any essentials for your stay as there’s not much within walking distance of the airbnb itself. It may be easier to do this from Bruton or Frome instead.
A little bit more about the airbnb…
There is a 2-night minimum stay
The airbnb sleeps up to 8 people in total so it’s perfect for larger groups of friends or family - the biggest bedroom has a gorgeous view of the countryside and then there are 2 more double bedrooms (both with queen beds) and 1 twin bedroom. Overall, the house is super spacious with a large lounge, conservatory and kitchen area too.
You get access to a pool (separate to the airbnb itself) but it’s shared with two other cottages. You can sign up once you’re there to make sure you can have it to yourself and you can only use it between the hours of 10am and 6pm. You’re provided with one towel each as a guest so I’d recommend taking your own separate towel to use for the pool.
There’s an open fire in the lounge which makes it extra cosy and perfect for movie nights in the house.
There is a garden with a BBQ and some outdoor furniture for al fresco dining (if the British weather allows it…). We mostly were very lucky with the weather over the weekend but also got caught in the rain a little so be prepared for all types of weather.
The nearest supermarket, Tesco, is a c.10 min drive away so I’d recommend buying any food, drink and essentials you need in one go before you check-in.
What is there to do nearby?
The house is in a peaceful spot in the countryside and we didn’t really feel the need to go too far from it. You could do some lovely walks that start from the house e.g. we walked c.45 mins through the countryside to a local pub for lunch called The Lion, recommended by the host. Overall, if you’re not driving, I’d recommend making the most of the airbnb itself, take a book to read, swim in the pool and enjoy being surrounded by nature. In the evening, we saw SO many stars and it was genuinely magical.
Alternatively, if you have a car, you could also drive to nearby towns such as Bruton and Frome. We visited Frome on our way back to London and stopped at The River House for some brunch. Highly recommend this!
What shall I pack?
I would pack on the assumption that you’re spending most of your time around and near the house. We got caught in some rain so make sure you’re prepared for all types of weather, especially if you’re planning to do local countryside walks. Below are some things you might want to take including loungewear, swimsuit, spare towel, a waterproof jacket and a good pair of walking shoes. ALL the essentials for a wholesome weekend away.
