hotel review: mondrian

You may have already seen from my previous post that I recently checked in to Mondrian Hotel in Shoreditch at the start of March. This was a gifted stay and whilst there was no obligation to do a second post, I wanted to do it to share a few more details about the hotel as I genuinely loved my experience.

Over time, I often receive similar questions about hotels/places I’ve stayed and I’ve attempted to bring these together in four key categories: value for money, facilities, service and location. So, all my reviews going forwards will be anchored around these. As always, if you’re wanting to know anything else, please drop me a message!

value for money

The question that everyone wants to know the answer to — is it worth it?! With the smallest bed and breakfast rooms starting from £299 a night, Mondrian is certainly not a “budget” stay but it’s not really designed to be. With the 5-star rating comes access to hotel facilities, incredibly attentive service, a very comfortable bed and so much more. Some of the larger rooms also have glorious bathtubs. Overall, it’s one that I would save for a treat.

It’s worth noting that guests who book directly through the hotel get more perks e.g. food/drink/wellness discounts as well as full access to the rooftop pool.

Facilities

The facilities were mostly as you would expect from a 5-star hotel. The rooms were equipped with the essentials such as toothbrush, toothpaste, tea, coffee…but we were also spoilt with luxuries, such as a mini-bar, a steam rain shower (which is essentially a shower that doubles up as your own little steam room - incredible!), underfloor heating in the bathroom, dressing gown and slippers.

However, I was surprised by was the lack of ‘smart’ TV so you weren’t able to wirelessly connect your phone i.e. no Netflix! Whilst I don’t typically take a holiday to watch TV, we had planned a movie night to wind down. Having said that, we were kindly offered a HDMI cable by reception but we didn’t have the right connectors anyway. Not a deal breaker but worth noting.

It’s also worth noting that guests only have full access to the rooftop pool if they book directly through the hotel otherwise you can only access it until 12pm (which is not ideal but I guess it’s to encourage direct bookings). After checking out, we used Altitude (the rooftop restaurant) as a workspace for the morning. Laptops are not allowed after 12pm!

There is also a gym and spa for guests to enjoy below ground level - aka away from any city noise so you can really switch off.

Service

The service was impeccable from the moment we checked in to when we left. Our bags were immediately attended to before we even reached the check-in desk — which, after carrying a heavy overnight bag from the station, was a very welcome gesture. The bar staff in Christina’s were friendly and chatty and we got some helpful menu recommendations from the lovely staff in BiBo’s.

Location

It’s probably no surprise that I absolutely LOVE the location. Shoreditch will always be one of my favourite parts of London as it’s a constant source of creative inspiration. You can also read my guide to Shoreditch for local food, shops and streets.

The hotel is a 10-min (ish) walk from Liverpool Street station so it’s easily accessible via public transport which is expected in the city. However, I would note that because of its central location, you may hear the occasional siren or street-level noise from your room.

Overall, a same-city staycation is very much a luxury I feel very lucky to be able to do this! Have you done a same-city staycation before?

Thanks for reading,

T.
