A Relaxing Northumberland Cottage Stay by the Coast

Hello! I’ve been very lucky to have had three short trips in the last month so I’ve got lots and lots to share with you. I started with a week in Northumberland at the end of August (it was my first time visiting this part of the UK) and it was a lovely escape. We stayed in a cosy Northumberland cottage just a few minutes away from the beach, which made the perfect base for exploring.

After that, I headed to the Lake District for a few nights (my favourite place in the whole world) and then a short city break to Rome. While I’ve been very lucky to enjoy lots of overseas travel this year, I’ve genuinely missed a classic UK stay, so I’m excited to lean into more of these slower, cosier trips for the rest of the year (with one big exception in October, which I’ll share more on soon).

How do you get there?

The cottage is located just outside Seahouses. The easiest way to get here is definitely by car, especially as driving gives you the flexibility to explore spots further afield and at your own pace. Parking at the cottage is included too.

If you’re travelling by public transport, it’s still possible to get here, although journeys can take a little longer. The nearest train station is Chathill, from where you can take a local bus towards Bamburgh and hop off about 15 minutes’ walk from the cottage. Keep in mind that buses can be infrequent, so it’s worth checking the timetable in advance. It’s also worth noting that the nearest shop for groceries is a Co-op in Seahouses, which is around a 30 min walk from the cottage.

A little bit about the cottage

  • There is a 3-night minimum stay. I think this is necessary so you have enough time to explore the area and rest! Prices start from around £540 per night which is approximately £65pp (assuming all 8 people book).

  • It sleeps up to 8 guests across four bedrooms, making it ideal for a family gathering or group trip. Two of the bedrooms are kingsize (one with an ensuite), there’s a twin room, and another double with a view of Bamburgh Castle in the distance.

  • The cottage is a 5-min walk from the beach and it’s one of the most most beautiful stretches of coastline in Northumberland. It felt like the perfect mix of peaceful and secluded, but still close enough to explore the area’s most iconic spots.

  • The cottage is really spacious and there is a cosy living room, fully equipped kitchen and a sunroom that looks out to the countryside. It was the perfect spot for a coffee in the morning sun or for an afternoon read.

  • The outside space is just as lovely. We were lucky with the weather so made the most of the comfy outdoor seating and had a late summer BBQ. There’s also a games room in the converted garage ideal for rainy days or evenings in.

Overall, the cottage felt like a perfect balance of relaxed and luxurious and is such a lovely base for exploring the Northumberland coast!

Things to do nearby

One of the best things about staying in the cottage is that you can explore lots on foot. From the cottage, you can easily walk to Bamburgh Castle, one of the region’s most iconic spots (I was also very keen to visit after binge watching The Last Kingdom on Netflix last summer and falling in love with Uthred). The castle sits dramatically above the beach and is super impressive.

If you do choose to drive, you can also travel a little further afield and plan a day trip to Holy Island (Lindisfarne). The island is only accessible at low tide, so be sure to check the tide times before you go, but once across, it’s perfect for a gentle coastal stroll.

We cooked all of our dinners in the cottage but for lunch, we visited The Ship Inn, a cosy and traditional pub serving great toasties and drinks - an ideal spot after a day of walking. We also made the most of the sunny evenings by walking to the beach for golden hour and sunsets - a very lovely way to end the days and so easy to do given the proximity to the beach.

And on our way back to London, we stopped at Alnmouth, a charming little village with colourful houses and sweeping coastal views that made for the loveliest final stop of the trip. We also stopped by the The Old School Gallery and Scotts of Alnmouth for some coffee and lunch, both of which I’d highly recommend.

Overall, our stay in Northumberland was peaceful, cosy, and very relaxed. The cottage was such a great base to explore as it was close enough to the coast for evening walks but tucked away enough to feel like a retreat.
